"The audience of this statement is broad because pornography affects so many people’s lives and requires a collaborative, concentrated effort by all of us to counter its harms. The statement itself is addressed primarily to parents, clergy, diocesan and parish leaders, educators, mental health professionals, and all those in positions to help protect children from pornography and heal the men, women, and young people who have been harmed by its use. We also hope the statement will be helpful for men, women, and young people who themselves view pornography, whether occasionally or habitually, or who have been victimized by pornography.” Introduction from CREATE – IN ME A – CLEAR HEART.

Create In Me A Clean Heart

The abridged version of the USCCB statement Create in Me a Clean Heart: A Pastoral Response to Pornography (2015) provides an accessible, easy-to-understand distillation of the bishops’ message of hope and healing to those who struggle with pornography use and addiction. This pamphlet explains the Church’s teaching on pornography, how pornography use affects various people in society, and what can be done to help. This is a good resource for adult faith formation, RCIA classes, chastity courses, and so on.

Raising Chaste Children In A Pornography World

One of the most difficult challenges parents face today is helping their children navigate a culture where pornography is more accessible than ever before. In the pamphlet “Raising Chaste Children in a Pornographic World,” Internet safety expert Ryan Foley gives five tried-and-true strategies for helping children grow in the virtue of chastity in the midst of a challenging environment. This is a good resource for all Catholic parents and grandparents, as well as for those who work with children in school and parish settings.

Pornography's Effects on Marriage and Hope for Married Couples

Pornography use within a marriage can have devastating effects, causing betrayal, deep hurt, and broken trust. In the pamphlet “Pornography’s Effects on Marriage and Hope for Married Couples,” counselor Sam Meier and his wife Beth share their hopeful story along with practical tips for healing marriages from pornography. This is a good resource for married couples, engaged couples, and those who minister to couples and families.

The Role OF Priests In Ministry to Those Who Struggle with Pornography

Priests are well aware of the harm that pornography use and addiction has on the Catholic faithful. In the pamphlet “The Role of Priests in Ministry to Those Who Struggle with Pornography,” psychologist Fr. David Songy offers wise counsel for how priests can be spiritual fathers to men and women in these circumstances, including advice on what to say when the topic of pornography comes up in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This resource is intended for priests and some content is also applicable to deacons.

"Wash Me Thoroughly": Healing from Pornography Use and Addiction

Many people today struggle with pornography use or addiction: men, women, young people; married people, singles, clergy, and so on. It is a challenging problem to overcome, but there is always hope. In the pamphlet “ ‘Wash Me Thoroughly’: Healing from Pornography Use and Addiction,” counselor Daniel Spadaro provides concrete strategies for breaking free from pornography. This is a good resource to have available in the parish church or school, perhaps in a discreet location, and would also be good for adult faith formation, RCIA classes, parent education, and young adult ministry.
