Certification Period and Ongoing Formation Hours

Catechists receive certification for a period of three (3) years, during which time they are expected to maintain their certification through engaging in ongoing formation. A total of thirty (30) hours of ongoing formation is required over a three-year period, averaging ten (10) hours each year.

What workshops can you use for receritifcation?

Certification expires at the end of three years from the date of issue. Catechists may earn renewal of certification by:

  1. Repeating the Theology Phase at a Ministry Formation Center.
  2. Participating in an additional 30 hours of courses and workshops (i.e., RE Congress, Regional Congresses, Parish Programs facilitated by a Master Catechist, etc.) selected from the following topics as they relate to the catechetical ministry:
a) Scripture
b) Doctrine
c) Morality
d) Sacraments/Liturgy
e) Church (Ecclesiology)
f) Psychology
g) Pedagogy
h) Classroom Skills

As the time for re-certification comes close, certified catechists are encouraged to submit a record of their ongoing formation to the Office of Religious Education. A re-certification form is available to assist in this process:

NOTE:  Recertification forms are processed on the fourth (4th) Friday of each month except for December when they are processed on or before the third (3rd) Friday.
